IPA Signs onto Letter to CDC/Operation Warp Speed Urging Transparency in COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery Schedule
By Darren Covington on 1/25/2021
On January 21, 2021, IPA, along with 29 other state pharmacy associations, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and other national organizations, signed a letter to urge the federal government to share with states and providers the anticipated lot release dates from manufacturers for vaccine doses purchased through Operation Warp Speed.
Administering the COVID-19 vaccine en masse presents a myriad of logisitcal challenges. It is difficult to meet these logistical needs if a pharmacy lacks transparency into how many doses and when these doses will be delivered. Without this transparency, it will also be difficult for pharmacies to have assurance that a second dose of the vaccine will be available when needed.
The signatories of this letter urged the federal government to create a dashboard similar to the one created last year for allocations of remdesivir. That dashboard was updated weekly and provided allocation information per state.
Many pharmacies in Indiana are eager and willing to assist in the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. IPA stands with them to help reduce barriers to accomplishing this massive public health goal.
