Dr. Kris Box Signs Standing Order Allowing Indiana Pharmacists to Prescribe Tobacco Cessation Products
By IPA on 7/15/2019
Dear Indiana Pharmacy Colleagues,
Your Indiana Pharmacists Association is very excited to announce that IPA’s Veronica Vernon, Gloria Sachdev and Randy Hitchens joined a press conference Monday, July 15, where State Health Commissioner Kris Box, MD, issued a standing order effective August 1 allowing Hoosiers to purchase tobacco cessation products at Indiana pharmacies without having to obtain an individual prescription. Indiana becomes the 12th state with a policy allowing pharmacists to prescribe tobacco cessation products, eliminating financial and time barriers for individuals considering quitting smoking. Additionally, Secretary of Indiana Family and Social Services Dr. Jennifer Walthall, MD, announced that Indiana will reimburse health care providers for offering tobacco cessation counseling for expectant mothers and that Indiana Medicaid will remove copayments for tobacco cessation products for pregnant women up to one year postpartum.
This is fantastic news for Indiana pharmacy as we continue to expand the health care product categories that Indiana pharmacists can prescribe. The standing order is the result of a 2-year campaign that involved an IPA-driven law from 2018 and numerous meetings with Dr. Box and the Indiana Department of Health. Congratulations to John Hertig, Karen Hudmon, Denise Fields, Senator Ron Grooms, Representative Steve Davisson, Russ Stults, Gloria, Veronica and our Legislative and Regulatory Council for this BIG win for Indiana pharmacists and technicians.
